<PROGRAMME>
Claude Debussy Estampes
Frédéric Chopin Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52
Franz Liszt Études d’exécution transcendante, S. 139 VIII: Wilde Jagd
Franz Schubert Fantasie in C Major, Op. 15 (“Wandererfantasie”)The great Schubert work from which this program takes its name was composed in 1822 and based on a song the composer had written six years earlier. Its considerable technical demands (especially in the fugal finale) were rather beyond the pianistic abilities of its composer, who commented that the devil might be able to play it. The musical devil who did eventually play it a lot—Franz Liszt—was only eleven at the time of its composition, although already in possession of a transcendental technique that would become even more so as he challenged himself with his own études, the first versions of which were composed at the age of fifteen. Chopin’s fourth ballade is justifiably one of the favourite works of the Romantic piano literature, while Debussy’s three Estampes give us tone paintings respectively of the Orient, of Granada (Spain), and of a garden in Normandy.
